Thoughts

VIA Metropolitan Transit continues their push toward more sustainable and environmentally conscious properties by retrofitting many of their existing transit center sites with a more sustainable approach. Fisher Heck’s partnership with VIA dates back to 2003 and has allowed us to design and retrofit multiple transit centers throughout San Antonio including North Star, 5-Points, Ingram, Melrose, and South-Central.

By 2025, a new VIA Randolph Transit Center will replace the existing 25 year old park & ride facility that has occupied the busy intersection near Interstate 35 and Loop 410. The new facility features a forward thinking approach focused on the daily user experience through sustainable design principals. Shading and natural daylighting specifically, became a driving forces throughout the modern design, highlighted by the perforated wrap around, clerestory screen wall that shields tall east and south facing windows during the day, while adding a textured fabric to the building in contrast to the adjacent smooth metal panels below the expansive drop-off canopy. The west end of the building features a large signage anchor for the site that faces both intersecting highways as a beacon for visitors.
