Thoughts
This 1860’s dwelling was carefully rehabilitated in an effort to make the three and half acre property more enticing to prospective buyers and ensure the historic structure would continue to serve as an asset to the overall property. The original house was assembled for German immigrant, Eugen Voelker, who built the home for his family where they raised cattle, sheep, goats, and hogs. His oldest daughter Anna married Casper Sueltenfuss a year after Eugen’s death and they continued to farm the land until the early 1900s. Casper also operated a rural Kendall County post office in the home from 1883-1907 known as the Schiller Post Office. Perched on one of the highest points within the area, now known as Cordillera Ranch, the former post office could be seen from miles away making it easier for mail carriers to find amidst a wide open landscape. The house features original German fachwerk timber framing with adobe block infill. The existing cement plaster cladding was carefully removed and replaced with lime plaster, allowing the walls to breath more naturally and protect the adobe better long term. Exposed wood and stone work around the house was carefully cleaned and sanded for a natural finish, while an attached 1980’s dogtrot structure, built to mimic the original fachwerk, was demolished at the rear of the building.
