Thoughts
Once a long-abandoned structure, this late 1800s Shingle-style residence has been meticulously reclaimed, transforming from a historic detriment into a cornerstone of Cuero’s residential historic district. Commissioned by a dedicated local preservationist, our team embarked on a comprehensive restoration to reaffirm the home’s storied place in the neighborhood, balancing archaeological respect with modern performance.
The project required a sensitive, "down-to-the-studs" approach, where every original detail was either painstakingly refinished or authentically rebuilt. To ensure the home meets contemporary living standards without compromising its integrity, we discreetly integrated all-new mechanical and lighting systems throughout the historic envelope.
A critical component of the design is a new ground floor rear addition. Tucked privately away from the primary historic facade, this new primary bedroom suite provides essential space while respecting the original home’s scale and silhouette. Complementing the residence, a new carport and driveway offer modern convenience through a design language that remains subordinate to the historic main house. Every phase of this restoration and expansion was executed in strict accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards, ensuring a seamless and reversible dialogue between the 19th-century craftsmanship and 21st-century utility.
