Thoughts
Located within the historic Bexar County Courthouse, this new 6,500 exhibit space aims to educate visitors on the history and accomplishments of the County, through an entertaining array of interactive dioramas. Prior to construction, the space was subdivided into three separate office areas with dropped ceilings, multiple light fixture types and floor finishes. The first step was to strip down the three spaces to the raw materials of the building structure. This allowed for walls and ceilings to be patched and the floor leveled for a uniform walking surface throughout the center. The design team worked closely with the exhibit designers on the overall space planning of the new center and making sure the right amount of infrastructure was in place to support each exhibit’s needs. We also made sure egress requirements and ADA standards were met during the design phase of the project. The concrete structure above was exposed to maximize the available height throughout the space. Together with new tile carpeting throughout, they unite the space as a singular experience. The center is open to the public during normal business hours of the courthouse and includes free admission.
