Waxy OConnors Irish Pub
Waxy O'Connor's Irish Pub is located on the San Antonio River Walk in the historic San Antonio Loan and Trust Company Building. Fisher Heck Architects is renovating this entire historic building constructed in 1901 for George W. Brackenridge. The firm also designed Waxy's new space, working with Irish interior designers.
The renovation's most impressive result is the creation of a basement level that opens to the San Antonio River Walk. The entire footprint below the first floor was excavated to River Walk level, and connected under Crockett Street to create an entrance from the River Walk. The Loan & Trust's original safe on the first floor had to be supported on a new steel structure since its solid masonry foundation was removed during the excavation. The pub features an impressive hand-crafted bar and back bar, along with wood paneling and trim, all built in Dublin and re-assembled in San Antonio by the same craftsmen.
Renowned in England, where Waxy O'Connor's are popular pubs for soccer fans, this will be the pub's second U.S. location. Owners from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., bring to San Antonio an entertainment spot respected for its traditional pub menu and variety of beers and ales. Waxy's was recognized by New Times Magazine as the "Best Bar in Fort Lauderdale 2005."
