New Braunfels Bandstand
The Main Plaza Bandstand was built by the City of New Braunfels with donations from the citizens as a place where the Waldschmidts Fireman Band could play. It was completed in July of 1905 for a total cost of $560.
In 2003 the City of New Braunfels and their Mainstreet Office determined that the Bandstand should receive some much needed TLC in anticipation of its 100th birthday celebration.
The scope of the project included new dampproofing of the foundation, new steps and handrails to meet current accessibility requirements, basement windows were repaired or replaced, and the stone cladding was repointed. The deteriorated terne metal roofing was replaced to match the historic, including replicated pressed metal hip roles. Finally, the entire wood structure and the roofing were painted to match physical and photographic evidence of the scheme used during its late 1920s era.
San Pedro Park Bandstand
The Victorian bandstand was built for San Pedro Park between 1897 and 1899. It was erected using the old limestone bear pit as its foundation (the bear pit remained from a small zoo developed between 1852 and 1874.)
Although in much need of repair, almost all of the bandstands original form and materials still remained.
During the restoration, the grade was modified to prevent water from undermining the foundation, and masonry foundation walls were stabilized. Rotted floor joists were replaced. New floor decking was installed and roof decking was replaced as needed. All deteriorated decorative wood elements were replaced to match the existing. The bandstand received new flat-seamed roofing sized to replicate the original historic pattern.
Alamo Plaza Bandstand
This bandstand was built by the City of San Antonio to commemorate our Nations Bicentennial. Its design was patterned after the Victorian bandstand in San Pedro Springs Park. It is one of the focal points of Alamo Plaza which forms an important public space and the portal to The Alamo.
