Karnes County Courthouse
In the past, Fisher Heck Architects has
completed a Master Plan for the Karnes County Courthouse, as well as previous work to bring this historic building up to current code requirements. Recently we completed the construction documents phase of a complete restoration of the courthouse. Built in 1894 of local brick with sandstone detailing, this was a typical late Victorian structure. Later
modifications in the 1920’s completely changed its appearance with the removal of a central clock tower and four conical turrets, and the addition of a long wing at the west side. All of the original wood windows were eventually removed and replaced with metal windows, and the exterior brick plastered and then painted. Interior modifications included the partitioning off of what used to be a grand two volume high district courtroom; replacement of original floors with concrete slabs and the lowering of almost all ceilings for the installation of HVAC systems. The current project intends to reverse all of these modifications and restore the original Victorian character of the building along with the installation of new mechanical and electrical system.
