Historic Preservation

Preservation of historic buildings is one of the foundations of FisherHeck Architects. We have maintained a keen interest in older structures for thirty years, and have worked on over 115 preservation projects. For Fisher Heck preservation is not just a passing fad. Rather, it is a commitment to maintain our cultural resources. We believe that preservation of older structures add interest to our landscape as well as preserving elements of our history. We also understand that renewal of historic urban areas makes our cities stronger, reduces urban sprawl, and conserves natural resources.

We have experience with restoration, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of historic buildings. Each type of preservation requires an understanding of what the owner wants to achieve. In one instance an owner may want careful maintenance of an existing structure. The next client may need a major rehabilitation of a deteriorating landmark. Each approach requires a special process of developing the scope of work, executing the construction documents, and seeing that a skillful constructor treats the structure with the appropriate care.

Our expertise allows us to complete academically correct restorations using proper conservation techniques and replication of missing elements. We also are able to do handsome adaptive reuse projects that do not require faithful replication of the original design. Projects completed by FisherHeck have been honored with awards from Preservation Texas, the San Antonio Conservation Society, the Minnesota State AIA Honor award, and have earned the respect of the Texas Historical Commission. .

Our firm is also experienced in preservation planning and urban design improvements of existing neighborhoods and historic districts. The firm has not only technical knowledge of urban design principals, but also years of experiences with neighborhood organizations, Main Street projects, historic review commissions, and redevelopment authorities.

In addition to Historic Preservation, FisherHeck is recognized for its expertise in the areas of religious architecture, educational/institutional design, residential and commercial design. Committed to creating unique design while being conscious of the client’s goals and the site’s character, FisherHeck is dedicated to designing projects that strengthen and benefit community.
