Crain Residence
San Antonio, Texas
The owners chose a Federal style home for their young family. Their program, which included both formal and informal living areas and large bedrooms for the children, resulted in the design of an 8000 square foot residence along with a three-car garage.
FisherHeck included details faithful to the Federal style. Details include an arched opening with true divided light windows, a classically proportioned front porch, and a hipped roof with supporting cornice. The garage was designed as a separate structure, connected to the house by an arcade.
The interior of the house also utilizes Federal details and traditional design elements. The entry hall contains a wide stairway with a spindled ballistrade and newel posts. Brick from the exterior was used in the less formal areas of the house such as the arches in the garden room and the fireplace in the breakfast room. The owners wanted a formal library to house a collection of rare books and prints. The resulting two story library with cast iron stairway and u-shaped mezzanine is a unique addition. A paneled fireplace dominates this room along wth a large Audobon print.
